How they serve the community

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Center provides high-quality programming in a safe and nurturing environment, proactively responding to the changing needs of low-income Newport County residents. Incorporated in 1922, the center was renamed for Dr. King in 1968. The center’s mission is to empower individuals and families to improve their quality of life as they seek nutritional, educational, and social supports, and economic opportunity.

How the BlueAngel Grant will help

Innovative, community-based nutrition and case management services embedded in established and new programs will be offered to approximately 3,500 children, adults, families, and seniors in 2013 at the center. The goals of the expanded program are to increase intake of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, increase physical activity to 30 minutes each day, and to improve the overall health of all clients.
