Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island issues statement on House passage of the American Health Care Act

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island President & CEO Kim Keck issued the following statement regarding House passage of the American Health Care Act (AHCA):

There is no greater priority for Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island than ensuring that Rhode Islanders have access to high quality, affordable care. We have worked in partnership with elected officials, business leaders, and the healthcare community in Rhode Island to assure that our state’s approach to healthcare achieves this critical goal.

While the national conversation regarding the AHCA continues, we are concerned about the potential impact the currently proposed legislation would have on access to healthcare for Rhode Islanders. In addition, healthcare costs continue to increase and the AHCA passed by the House of Representatives reduces assistance to those who can least afford health insurance.

We must assure the stability of our state’s health insurance market and its ability to cover quality care for Rhode Islanders.

Thursday’s vote is the first step in what will be a long process and we recognize that the final legislation may look substantially different from the bill passed yesterday. We will continue to collaborate with our congressional delegation, the governor, and the General Assembly to advocate for the best interests of Rhode Islanders and to ensure their access to affordable, high quality care.
