(Providence, RI, 6.22.2009)

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced that it is now accepting applications for its 2010 BlueAngel Community Health Grant program. This annual program grants funding to nonprofits for initiatives that improve the health of Rhode Islanders in need.

"Our goal is to fund projects and initiatives that are closely aligned with our corporate vision," said Linda Newton, BCBSRI's vice president of community relations, corporate social responsibility and diversity. "With this, all funded programs must strive to maintain or increase access to healthcare for the uninsured and underinsured in Rhode Island, with a particular focus on minority populations."

To qualify, organizations must be tax-exempt with 501(c)(3) status. Examples of programs that should consider applying are those that offer direct healthcare services, healthcare education, or navigation of the healthcare system including coverage options, and maintenance and prevention of chronic illnesses prevalent within minority populations.

BCBSRI accepts and reviews proposals for the BlueAngel Community Health Grant program once a year.
