PROVIDENCE, RI (May 21, 2012) – In support of developing innovative products that engage members to take charge of their health, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced a new health plan, called LifeStyleBlue, for the small employer market. LifeStyleBlue offers one plan and one price, with the flexibility of three benefit designs to fit the lifestyles of a diverse employee population and provides an opportunity for employees to earn incentives and rewards to help them become and/or stay healthy and active.
“BCBSRI understands that employers are looking for unique ways to deliver health benefits that offer flexibility and engage employees in leading a healthy lifestyle with rewards and incentives, while also addressing affordability,” said Jim Gallagher, assistant vice president of strategic marketing and product innovation. “We believe our new plan provides employers the ease of administration by offering one price and one plan with a number of options and gives employees the coverage they need to take charge of their health.”
LifeStyleBlue’s three benefit designs all include active lifestyle rewards, wellness steps and incentives, as well as reduced co-pays for those who receive care from a provider located at a patient-centered medical home (PCMH). Additionally, employees enrolled in LifeStyleBlue can reduce their deductible for the following year, if they choose to complete three optional wellness steps. The steps include completing an electronic personal health exam, receiving an annual medical exam and participating in a BCBSRI care coordination program. When a member completes these three wellness steps, the deductible will be reduced for the following year by $250 for an individual plan and by $500 for a family plan.
LifeStyleBlue’s three benefit designs include:
• On your own: Ideal for employees just starting out and/or interested in staying healthy and active. This benefit design offers a $150 per year reimbursement for a gym membership.
• Family Matters: A good match for employees focused on caring for children and keeping the entire family healthy. This benefit design offers reduced copays for child sick visits, compared to the other designs.
• House to yourself: Ideal for empty nesters interested in improving and/or maintaining their health and becoming more active.
While the three benefit designs are different, they also share similar features such as $0 copays for all preventive services, including adult and pediatric well exams, adult and child immunizations, PAP smear and mammogram screening and prostate tests, and colorectal screenings. When seeing a provider practicing at a PCMH, all three benefit designs also offer $0 copays for non-preventive services.
LifeStyleBlue also offers additional incentives for living an active lifestyle. Members can receive reimbursement—up to a $200 for an individual and $400 for a family—for participation in healthy activities including, but not limited to dance lessons, sports league fees, yoga, weight loss programs, or healthy cooking classes.
