Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) announced today that Mark Waggoner is its new vice president and chief contracting officer. Mr. Waggoner will be responsible for strategic and operational oversight of the company's Provider Contracting Division and will report to Harold Picken, M.D., vice president of Health Operations.
"BCBSRI continues to explore alternative reimbursement methodologies to the current fee-for-service model—such as incenting and rewarding quality of care and better health outcomes—and Mark's background and experience in this area will be an asset to us," said James E. Purcell, BCBSRI's President and CEO. "He will be instrumental in helping us enhance the quality and affordability of care for our members."
Mr. Waggoner comes to BCBSRI from Harvard Pilgrim Health Care in Wellesley, Massachusetts, where he was Director of Network Contracting. In this role, he was responsible for overseeing the company's Massachusetts and Rhode Island contracting operations. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Clemson University, a Master of Health Administration and Policy degree from The Medical University of South Carolina, and a Master of Business Administration degree from Bentley College.
