Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced the election of William Hancur, Ph.D., associate medical director for behavioral health, to the Board of Directors of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology. Dr. Hancur was elected to a four-year term, effective January 1, 2012.

The relationship between mental and physical health is extremely important when helping a patient achieve a healthy state, which is why BCBSRI is actively exploring the ways that trained specialists can treat social, emotional, mental and behavioral issues within the patient-centered medical home model,” said Hancur. “I’m confident that the medical homes we are working with in Rhode Island can make a positive impact and I’m very excited to bring this and many other experiences to the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology.”

Dr. Hancur joined BCBSRI in 2000. Previously, he worked at Harvard Pilgrim Health Care for 27 years. Dr. Hancur has also served as Chair of the Governor’s Council on Mental Health, Chair of the Governor’s Council on Substance Abuse, Chair of the Legislative Committee for the Rhode Island Psychological Association and a member of the Rhode Island Psychological Association Ethics Committee. In addition, he has served as a consultant for many organizations including Planned Parenthood of Rhode Island, the North American Family Institute and the Narragansett Indian Health Center. Dr. Hancur has been credentialed by the National Register since 1976 and has been in private practice since 1974, when he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Rhode Island.

“Bill has long been a recognized leader in this field. His commitment and vision are exemplified by his work to implement and grow the BCBSRI statewide system of patient-centered medical homes. We are delighted to have his expertise on the Board of Directors of the National Register of Health Service Providers in Psychology,” said Judy E. Hall, Ph.D., executive officer of the National Register.
