Physicians rank Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) first among 30 Northeast health insurance plans for timely claims processing, according to athenahealth.com's PayerViewSM survey. Among its Blue Cross and Blue Shield peers nationally, BCBSRI is ranked number one for its physician-friendly claims processing and payments.
"Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island's commitment to delivering superior service and value to physicians remains steadfast," said James E. Purcell, president and CEO, BCBSRI. "While we are grateful for these results, we are working harder than ever before to earn the trust and confidence of our stakeholders, especially our customers, our members, and their physicians."
BCBSRI's ranking was even more notable in that it showcased the company's ability to pay claims, on average, in 15.4 days—or close to half the time of the next-ranked company in athenahealth's list. BCBSRI was the fastest payer of physician claims for the third consecutive year and had the lowest percentage of denials for the second consecutive year, according to athenahealth.
Importantly, 97 percent of physician claims to BCBSRI are successfully resolved on the initial submission.
