How does Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) determine what new medical technologies and treatments will be covered?
To make a determination whether to cover new and emerging medical technologies, treatments, and medicines, BCBSRI uses review committees made up of medical professionals. These committees review available information about new treatments and make recommendations about whether to include it as a covered benefit.
We do not cover every new technology or treatment even if approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), however, BlueCHiP for Medicare does cover all medications and services covered by Medicare. Because we want to provide our members with the most effective care available, we sometimes decide to cover new services that are not printed in your original Evidence of Coverage. If you have any questions about coverage for new treatments, please call Customer Service.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is an HMO plan with a Medicare contract. Enrollment in Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island depends on contract renewal.
