What do the letters mean that precede my member number on the face of my ID card?

The prefixes which precede your identification number are used if a member receives services out of the service area. The letter prefix helps to identify that you are a Rhode Island Blue Cross & Blue Shield member. If you have any further questions you may contact BlueCHiP Customer Service at the numbers below:

How do I change my primary care physician (PCP)?

Your PCP is the provider who coordinates your care. If you change your PCP, the change becomes effective on the first day of the following month. For example, if you request a PCP change on April 22, you can see your new PCP on or after May 1. You must obtain new referrals to any specialist from your new PCP, once the change is effective. To choose a new physician, please consult your provider directory or contact BlueCHiP Customer Service at the numbers below:

Is my common law wife covered by my BCBSRI plan?

A common law spouse can be covered on an account with special approval. Only 11 states and the District of Columbia recognize Common Law: Alabama, Colorado, Iowa, Kansas, Montana, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. If the customer lives in a state other than those listed, a common law spouse cannot be added.

The member will need to fill out an affidavit, which will be reviewed. For further information please contact BlueCHiP Customer Service:
