Frequently Asked Questions

DenteMAX

Why has Blue Cross Dental changed to another national dental network?

Our national dental network has been leased through Mutual of Omaha (MOO). We were notified that beginning July 1, 2005, MOO will no longer have its own national dental network.

What is the name of the new national dental network and how many dentists participate?

The name of the new dental national network is DenteMAX. DenteMAX currently has more than 55,000 participating dentist locations, and expects to have between 60,000 - 75,000 participating dentists by the end of 2005.

What is DenteMAX?

DenteMAX is a wholly owned subsidiary of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. DenteMAX currently provides a national dental network to 14 other Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans.

Can I choose whether or not to transition to DenteMAX?

Because the MOO network is no longer available, our Dental Coast-to-Coast product will only be offered with the DenteMAX network.

Will this affect my premium rates?

The network change will not affect the premium rates for Dental Coast-to-Coast products in the short term. In the long term, we anticipate this change will have a positive impact on our pricing (reduced premiums).

Are the dentists in the DenteMAX network credentialed as they were in the previous network?

The providers in our national network are required to undergo one of the most rigorous credentialing processes in the industry. DenteMax credentials all of its participating providers using an NCQA accredited National Credentials Verification Organization. Each provider must pass 10 credentialing elements. Periodic verification of all network dental offices is conducted to ensure that all information is up to date. Providers must be recredentialed at least once every three years. This is an important feature of our national network.

How can my employees determine if their current dentists participate in the DenteMAX network?

Before July 1, 2005, members can access this information through the DenteMAX Web site at www.dentemax.com. After July 1, 2005, this information will be available through the Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Web site at www.BCBSRI.com.

If my employee’s dentist is not part of the DenteMAX network, how can the dentist join?

The member can call our Customer Service Department with the dentist’s name, address, and telephone number, and the Customer Service representative will forward that information to DenteMAX. DenteMAX will then contact the dentist for recruitment. Also, we will be identifying members whose dentists participate in the Mutual of Omaha network but not in the DenteMAX network, and will be contacting them individually by mail. The member then has the option of selecting a new dentist who participates with DenteMAX, or continuing with their existing dentist, although the dentist may now charge more than our allowance and require the member to pay the balance.

Are any benefits changing because of this new network?

No. The benefits available under your group dental plan remain the same. However, if your employees decide to change dentists, the amounts paid to their previous dentists will continue to be counted toward their annual dollar maximums.
