Member FAQs

The FAQs below provide more information for our members about a recent system disruption.

Member FAQs

Because of a nationwide disruption that is affecting BCBSRI, as well as other insurers, pharmacies, and healthcare providers, we are unable to print certain member checks, such as wellness and caregiver reimbursements. We are actively working on alternative ways to print and mail these checks, and we will update this information as we develop temporary solutions.

This service disruption prevents us from printing and mailing premium bills as usual. If you usually receive a premium bill from BCBSRI, you will instead receive a notice in the mail from us with your amount due and due date. This notice will serve as your bill. If you are currently enrolled in electronic funds transfer (EFT) with BCBSRI, no action is needed. The amount due will continue to be deducted from your account.

You can pay using the same methods as before the disruption.

Mail
Send your check and the lower portion of the notice to:
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of RI
PO Box 1057
Providence, RI 02901

Online
At myBCBSRI or through your own bank.

Phone
Call (401) 459-1000 and say “make a payment” when prompted.

In person
Drop off a check at one of these locations:
•    BCBSRI lobby, 500 Exchange Street, Providence
•    Any Your Blue StoreSM location

If you have the Doctors Online benefit, you can still use this telehealth service. However, because of the nationwide outage, Doctors Online cannot immediately verify any insurance benefits. So at the time of the visit, you will not pay for the service. Doctors Online will submit a claim to BCBSRI after your visit is completed and then will bill you for any copay you might owe once your insurance benefits are applied.

A major service provider in the healthcare industry, Change Healthcare, which is owned by UnitedHealth Group, has experienced a cyberattack. Even though it is a separate company, Change Healthcare’s outage has affected BCBSRI as well as other insurers, pharmacies, and healthcare providers across the country.

We are actively working to determine how this is impacting our members and are taking the necessary steps to ensure our members have access to needed services.

One result had been a disruption to pharmacy services for some members. We have been working with our pharmacy partners and believe this has been addressed for most members. However, if you are unable to fill a prescription, please call us. For fastest service, call the number on the back of your member ID card.

In the interest of protecting members’ information, we suspended all file sharing with Change Healthcare. This has caused some disruptions, and we are evaluating temporary alternative processes to address those issues.

There is no specific date yet as Change Healthcare is still evaluating the impact on its systems. Meanwhile, we are taking the necessary steps to ensure our members have access to needed services.
