Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Invests in Value-Based Care Leadership

Nick Lefeber brings 12+ years’ experience to new senior role

Providence, R.I. (May 25, 2022) — Expanding its ongoing commitment to transforming healthcare, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has named Nick Lefeber senior vice president of value-based care.

Lefeber comes to BCBSRI in May from DaVita Integrated Kidney Care (a division of DaVita Inc.), where he served as vice president of commercial value-based care. In his new role, Lefeber will be responsible for building synergies across value-based care, network management, pharmacy operations, and cognitive computing functions.

“We’re thrilled to welcome Nick to our team,” said Mark Stewart, executive vice president and chief financial offer for BCBSRI. “Investing in value-based care, which focuses on keeping people healthy, is key to improving health outcomes and lowering costs for our members. Nick has the perfect combination of experience, expertise, and personal commitment to lead this work.”

In nearly eight years with DaVita, Lefeber led commercial value-based contracts strategy, operations, and analytics and designed new provider partnership models and operational innovations. He also oversaw DaVita’s national community-based chronic kidney disease patient education program, Kidney Smart.

Prior to DaVita, Lefeber spent three years in business development with the Sarah Cannon Research Institute, a global strategic research organization focusing on advancing therapies and accelerating drug development. He earned his MBA from the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth and his undergraduate degree from Middlebury College.

“Continuing to advance BCBSRI’s role as a leader in value-based care is a tremendous opportunity,” said Lefeber. “I look forward to working with this exceptional team and am passionate about the impact value-based care can have on our members, our providers and the state’s healthcare system.”

Value-based care is proactive, preventive care, with an emphasis on keeping people healthy. Providers are empowered by tools, technology and infrastructure to coordinate care, with patients at the center of an integrated system. For more than 14 years, BCBSRI has worked with providers throughout the state to expand and develop value-based care programs designed to lower costs and achieve better health outcomes for Rhode Islanders.
