Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island Safe Zone Program

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) appreciates your interest in the LGBTQ Safe Zone Program. This certification reflects one of BCBSRI’s primary goals of fostering environments in which LGBTQ members feel welcome and safe in their health community.

Certification requirements for this program include: staff training specific to the care of trans and LGB people; protection for patients and staff from discrimination based on gender identity or expression; gender neutral bathrooms; inclusive forms and procedures; and a public commitment to connecting with and serving the LGBTQ community.

A preview of the application questions is provided here. As part of the application, it is required that supporting documentation/examples, etc. be uploaded to verify each response. A checklist for supporting documentation is available in the preview to guide which materials you should prepare.

Applications are to be completed per physical location. If you have multiple locations seeking certification, you will have the opportunity to add locations within the application.

Application review will be finalized in March and September each year following the application deadlines of February and August.

Please note: To attain certification, ALL responses must affirm the best practices.

To get started on the certification application, please check the "We Are Committed" box to demonstrate your commitment to demonstrate your commitment to adopt and implement the requirements of the program.
