Primary care referrals mean you’re not alone

Primary care providers (PCP) help you and all members make important decisions, and they can help manage your care with your entire healthcare team. If you have chosen one of our BlueCHiP plans through your employer, your PCP will coordinate referrals as needed when you see a specialist, have a test, and receive some other services.

Some covered services do not require a referral, including*:

  • Mental health and substance use services
  • Emergency and urgent care services
  • Eye exam (routine)
  • Hearing exam (routine)
  • Retail health clinics

Other services will require a referral, such as*:

  • Allergy office visit
  • Chiropractic office visit
  • Dermatology office visit
  • Occupational therapy
  • Oncology specialist
  • Physical therapy
  • Podiatry office visit
  • Specialist office visit
  • Vision care visit (non-routine)
