Primary care referrals mean you’re not alone

Primary care providers (PCP) help you make important decisions, and they can help manage your care with your entire healthcare team. If you have chosen one of our BlueCHiP plans through your employer, your PCP will coordinate referrals as needed when you see a specialist, have a test, and receive some other services.

Some covered services do not require a referral, including*:

  • Mental health and substance use services
  • Emergency and urgent care services
  • Eye exam (routine)
  • Hearing exam (routine)
  • Retail health clinics
  • Telehealth (Doctors Online)
  • OB/Gyn
  • Chiropractic care

Other services will require a referral, such as*:

BlueCHiP Flex, Network Blue New England, Network Blue New England Options, Blue Choice New England

  • Allergy office visit
  • Dermatology office visit
  • Podiatry office visit
  • Specialist office visit
