A statement from BCBSRI President & CEO Martha L. Wofford

At Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island, we stand in solidarity with victims of racial and social injustice. The guilty verdict in the Derek Chauvin trial for the senseless murder of George Floyd is a sign that justice is possible. We must continue to inform ourselves and reflect on our country’s long history of racial and social injustice so that we can move forward and not repeat the mistakes of the past. Our company will make every effort to create true health equity for all Rhode Islanders as part of our vision to passionately lead a state of health and well-being across Rhode Island. Further, as part of the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association Pledge to Make Meaningful Change, on April 20 Blue Cross Blue Shield companies launched a National Health Equity Strategy, with the intent to confront the nation’s crisis in racial heath disparities and reimagine a more equitable health care system, especially for people of color. Putting an end to the racial disparities in healthcare is among our highest priorities.
