Extending cancer care beyond the clinic

When BCBSRI member Steven was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer, he was overwhelmed, but grateful for the care from his primary care provider (PCP) and oncology team that  took the lead on treatment. Supporting that treatment was an added layer of care, made possible through a new BCBSRI program developed with Daymark Health and local cancer institutes.

Complementing—never replacing—a patient’s care team

“As oncologists, we’re able to provide comprehensive care in the cancer center,” says Dr. Angela Taber, Medical Director at Daymark Health. “But once patients go home, questions and concerns don’t stop. That’s where we fit in, working with their PCP and oncology team to support the patient 24/7.”

Services include around-the-clock access to clinicians, proactive symptom monitoring, and home or virtual visits when needed—all at no added cost to the patient. At every point, the patient’s PCP and specialists are at the center of decision-making. Daymark Health works to support adherence to treatment plans, reduce gaps in care, and help patients manage symptoms effectively—potentially avoiding unnecessary emergency department visits and after‑hours calls to physician offices.

For the patient, knowing someone is available anytime day or night is especially reassuring. “Cancer doesn’t quit at five o-clock, you know? It goes on and on and on,” Steven notes.

Providing support even before a diagnosis

Beyond supporting patients already in treatment, Daymark Health can assist even before cancer is confirmed. The team can help coordinate diagnostic appointments, follow‑ups, and referrals, and serve as advocates for individuals who may feel overwhelmed during the evaluation process. If needed, Daymark Health can also help identify appropriate local resources for cancer care.

Making a meaningful difference

Since its launch in March 2025, the program has earned a member Net Promoter Score (NPS) of 89—reflecting consistently high satisfaction among BCBSRI members receiving services. Most important, it’s made a meaningful difference to patients like Steven, who is now doing well, thanks to the support of his care team and Daymark Health. “I’m back to 98% of where I was before,” Steven says. “I’m so thankful … I tell everyone about this program because it made such a difference in my life.”
