September is National Recovery Month

Every September, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) sponsors National Recovery Month to increase awareness and understanding of mental and substance use disorders and celebrate the people who recover. This observance promotes the belief that behavioral health is essential to health, prevention works, treatment is effective, and people recover from mental and/or substance use disorders.

The theme for Recovery Month 2018 is Join the Voices for Recovery: Invest in Health, Home, Purpose, and Community. This 28th celebration of Recovery Month promotes the societal benefits of prevention, treatment, and recovery for mental and substance use disorders, celebrates people in recovery, lauds the contributions of treatment and service providers, and promotes the message that recovery in all its forms is possible.

BCBSRI has many resources available for our members with substance use disorders. In addition to covering traditional services that treat substance use disorders, such as inpatient detoxification and residential treatment, partial hospital programs, and intensive outpatient programs, BCBSRI offers the following innovative services:

CODAC Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) Program is an outpatient Buprenorphine/Naloxone or Buprenorphine
program offered by CODAC, a substance use disorder treatment facility. BCBSRI has partnered with Rhode Island’s
first Center of Excellence (COE) for the treatment of opioid dependence to provide comprehensive MAT-related services
to BCBSRI commercial members to facilitate recovery. The goal of the program is to offer structured and intensive
treatment including MAT, such as Suboxone, nursing, counseling and case management services that ultimately
lead to recovery and the ability to maintain recovery in a less intensive treatment program. If you wish to refer someone
to the program, please contact CODAC at (401) 461-5056.

CharterCare’s Medication-Assisted Treatment Program
In an effort to expand access to the most effective treatment for opioid use disorders, BCBSRI has partnered with
CharterCare Health Partners to offer a MAT program for our commercial population. Instead of offering services in
a traditional fee-for-service model, members are able to access physician visits, individual and group therapy, urine
drug screenings and care management services at a bundled rate with only one copay per month. The program also
offers expanded access for our members, with appointments available within three days of a request for services. To
learn more about the program for your patients, please contact CharterCare at (401) 456-2362.
