September is National Recovery Month

The lives of millions of Americans who struggle with mental illness and substance use disorders have been transformed through recovery. In 1989, National Recovery Month was founded to acknowledge the success of those in recovery and to educate and bring awareness to mental health and substance use disorders. The tagline, “Every Person. Every Family. Every Community,” emphasizes the idea that recovery is possible for everyone. National Recovery Month aims to educate and recognize recovery as a possibility for everyone and anyone as well as encouraging its difficult but rewarding path.

While National Recovery Month primarily focuses on recovery from substance use and mental health disorders, it is inclusive in its approach to recovery, recognizing that recovery can encompass all forms of health issues, including eating disorders. The National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA) and other organizations provide resources and support for individuals recovering from eating disorders, and their recovery journeys are equally important and recognized during this month.

Additionally, National Addiction Professionals Day is celebrated as a part of Recovery Month on September 20 to recognize the professionals who support individuals on their recovery journey.

In Rhode Island, Rally4Recovery hosts a free annual event for Rhode Islanders to explore resources and celebrate recovery. This event will take place on September 13. For more information on this event, please visit the website here
