Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode (BCBSRI), the local, non-profit health insurer, today announced that Chuck LoCurto has been elected chairman of the board of directors, effective January 1, 2012. LoCurto joined the BCBSRI board in May 2008. He succeeds Deborah R. Jacobson, who will complete her term as board chair at the end of this year.

For more than 10 years, Deb Jacobson has donated her time and talents to our organization, serving as board member, secretary, vice chair and, most recently, chair," said Peter Andruszkiewicz, BCBSRI president and CEO. "She guided BCBSRI through a major, company-wide transformation that included the introduction of electronic health records, and improved the interaction between the board and management. We're very fortunate to have had Deb as chair during this period of our company's growth.

"Now we start a new chapter in BCBSRI's history that will include the local implementation of healthcare reform, and we again are lucky to have a chair who knows healthcare, our company, and the Rhode Island market," said Andruszkiewicz. "Chuck LoCurto will provide the uninterrupted leadership that will keep us focused on our goal of improving the health of all Rhode Islanders, while improving our system of care and controlling costs."

LoCurto is executive vice president and chief information officer for Textron Financial Corporation, where he has been employed for the past 20 years. He earned a bachelor's degree from Clarion University of Pennsylvania and an MBA in human resource management from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. A member of the advisory board of Year Up, LoCurto also is a Governing Body Co-Chair of the Boston CIO Executive Summit.

"I'm excited to be entering this position at a time of unprecedented change in our state's healthcare system," said LoCurto. "We have a clear vision of where BCBSRI needs to go; what it will take to get there and a firm foundation on which to build. Our focus will remain on Rhode Island, and our decisions based upon what is in the best interest of Rhode Islanders."

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the state's leading health insurer and covers more than 600,000 members. The company is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association. For more information, visit BCBSRI.com and follow us on Twitter @BCBSRI.
