Help Wanted: Prevent Unnecessary Healthcare Spending

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Rhode Island Business Group on Health (RIBGH) are extending employers the opportunity to enroll in a free campaign, called “Choosing Wisely,” designed to reduce unnecessary healthcare spending.
According to the National Academy of Medicine, approximately $765 billion is spent on unnecessary tests, medications, and procedures.
The Choosing Wisely campaign was developed by the American Board of Internal Medicine Foundation (ABIMF) and promotes productive conversations between patients and doctors. For employers who enroll, the campaign also includes—at no cost—access to:

  • The "5 Questions to Ask Your Doctor" poster
  • The Choosing Wisely mobile app
  • Over 100 evidence-based educational materials
  • More than 550 recommendations developed by ABIMF and their Specialty Boards

The materials are available online and can be easily distributed to all employees, even those that reside outside of Rhode Island.

BCBSRI and RIBGH are asking brokers and consultants to help sign-up Rhode Island employers in the Choosing Wisely-RI campaign. This opportunity is free and available to any size employer and all industries.
To learn more about Choosing Wisely-RI and how to register your clients, contact Joanne Bilotta, RIBGH Choosing Wisely Campaign Manager at or (508) 404-6560 to schedule an orientation meeting.  For more information about RIBGH visit

Brokers, consultants, and employers are also invited to attend the RIBGH Annual Health Care Summit “Low Value Care Next Steps” on October 5, 2018 from 7:30 a.m.-noon at the Marriott, 10 Orms Street, in Providence. The summit will highlight how other states have reduced unnecessary spending of healthcare dollars incorporating Choosing Wisely. Visit to register.
