BCBSRI recognized nationally by The Civic 50 for community-mindedness

Blue across Rhode Island, the company’s annual day of service, receives special recognition

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has been named a 2026 honoree of The Civic 50®, a prestigious national award that recognizes the top 50 community-minded companies across the United States. It’s the second consecutive year that Points of Light, the world’s leading organization dedicated to increasing corporate volunteer service, has honored BCBSRI.

This year, Points of Light also recognized BCBSRI with an additional honor—the Companywide Volunteering Activation Award, for its annual Blue across Rhode Island day of service. Blue across Rhode Island is one of the largest company-sponsored volunteer events of its kind in the state. Every year, more than 550 associates fan out across the state in organized teams and spend the workday rolling up their sleeves to paint, plant, build and complete other projects that help nonprofit organizations fulfill their community missions.

“We’re extremely proud to be named to The Civic 50 for the second year in a row, and to be recognized by Points of Light for our volunteerism. As a local, nonprofit organization, we are deeply rooted in our community and serving our neighbors is core to who we are,” said BCBSRI President and CEO Martha L. Wofford. “We’re grateful to work shoulder to shoulder with amazing local organizations that are positively impacting the health and well-being of all Rhode Islanders.”

“Earning a place on The Civic 50 for a second consecutive year is incredibly meaningful to us. It speaks to the consistency of our commitment—and to initiatives like Blue across Rhode Island, which was honored for the way it connects our colleagues directly with communities,” said Carolyn Belisle, vice president of corporate social responsibility at BCBSRI. “Together with our nonprofit partners, we’re helping build a stronger, healthier Rhode Island.”

Now in its 14th year, The Civic 50 celebrates excellence in employee volunteering, community investment and social impact strategy. Annual results are based on The Civic 50 survey, which recognizes public and private companies with annual revenues of at least $1 billion. The Civic 50 remains the only survey and ranking system focused exclusively on measuring corporate community engagement.

“Today’s leading companies understand that community engagement is more than a program, it’s a reflection of their commitment to advancing social impact in ways that strengthen both their company and the communities they serve,” said Jennifer Sirangelo, president and CEO of Points of Light. “BCBSRI demonstrates how to embed purpose into the employee experience, build authentic relationships with communities and use business as a force for good. We’re proud to honor them with the 2026 Civic 50 award.”

The Companywide Volunteering Activation Award recognizes corporate activities that meaningfully engage employees across locations, functions and levels to drive community impact.

“We believe companies have an important role to play in mobilizing people, strengthening communities and creating lasting, sustainable impact. BCBSRI’s leadership demonstrates what is possible when service, purpose, and partnership come together to address community needs,” said Sirangelo.

Through its BlueAngel Community Investment program, BCBSRI actively partners with non-profit organizations across the state to support their efforts to advance the health and well-being of Rhode Islanders. In 2025, BCBSRI associates gave 9,487 volunteer hours, worth an estimated $297,000. All together last year, the company’s philanthropy benefited 232 non-profits and an estimated 346,000 Rhode Islanders. Insights from RI Life Index surveys, a public service initiative BCBSRI launched in partnership with Brown University’s School of Public Health, help guide the company’s community investments, ensuring they reflect the real experiences and priorities of Rhode Islanders.

BCBSRI will hold its 15th annual Blue across Rhode Island on Sept. 18. Partner organizations for the day of service will soon be announced.
