Rhode Islanders asked to participate in 8th annual RI Life Index survey

PROVIDENCE, R.I. — Rhode Islanders are being contacted to participate in the 8th annual RI Life Index, a survey that explores perceptions about the social factors affecting their health and well-being.

Surveys of randomly selected residents began in March and are being conducted by phone, text, and online. Topics include affordable housing, food security, cost of living, job opportunities, and services for children and seniors, among others.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) created the Index in 2019 in partnership with the Brown University School of Public Health. Since then, the Index has been updated annually, providing both a current portrait of Rhode Island’s strengths and challenges as well as emerging and evolving trend lines relating to wellness and quality of life. The survey will continue through the spring with results expected to be made public in fall 2026.

In 2024, the Index launched a related project, Rhode Island Voices, a year-round initiative to dive even deeper into learning about the lived experiences of Rhode Islanders. RI Voices enlists a panel of close to 1,000 Rhode Islanders to participate in web-based questionnaires throughout the year, delving into such topics as transportation, green space, and climate change. New panelists are always welcome to sign up. The project has grown to include the Rhode Island Voices podcast, a series designed to amplify the lived experiences and insights of Rhode Islanders on critical community health issues.

The RI Life Index and Rhode Island Voices are guided by the RI Life Index Coalition, a group of subject matter partners from 16 organizations across the state that assist in shaping the survey. Coalition members also offer thought leadership on solutions to the challenges identified in the Index.
