What is the Medicare CAHPS Survey—and why it matters to you

The Medicare Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS®) survey is an annual, standardized survey administered by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). It asks Medicare Advantage and Prescription Drug Plan members about their experiences with their health plan and providers. Questions focus on areas patients care about most, such as:

  • Getting needed care and appointments quickly
  • Communication with doctors
  • Care coordination across providers
  • Access to needed medications

When is it happening?

The CAHPS survey will be in the field from March to June of 2026. A random sample of patients will be selected by CMS. Patients who are selected will be notified in Q1.

Why should providers care?

  • Direct impact on star ratings: CAHPS results account for over one-quarter of a Medicare Advantage plan’s Star Rating, which influences plan payments and bonuses. Higher ratings can mean more resources for your patients and your practice.
  • Patient choice: Survey results are publicly reported on Medicare Plan Finder, shaping how patients choose plans and providers.
  • Better outcomes: Positive patient experiences are linked to improved adherence to treatment plans and overall health outcomes.

How you can make a difference

Every interaction matters. Patients are more likely to respond positively when they feel heard, informed, and supported. Key opportunities include:

  • Timely access: Offer same-day or next-day appointments when possible. Set expectations for waiting times when same day appointments are not available.
  • Clear communication: Explain care plans, medications, and referrals in plain language.
  • Care coordination: Ensure smooth transitions between specialists and primary care.
