Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) announced today that its care management program has been awarded a Certificate of Validation by Care InnovationsTM Validation Institute. The validation verifies that BCBSRI’s comprehensive program for patients with complex medical conditions has created cost savings while enhancing member health.

BCBSRI’s care management program creates a holistic patient experience by coordinating communication and treatment between BCBSRI and a member’s healthcare providers. Patients have direct access to BCBSRI nurses, dieticians, social workers or other medical professionals, depending on their specific medical needs. This coordination can help patients save money on prescriptions, stay out of the hospital and create healthy eating and exercise plans to promote wellness.

“Blue Cross is deeply committed to aligning with our provider and organizational partners to create a full continuum of care for patients with complex medical needs,” said Dr. Matt Collins, vice president of clinical integration at BCBSRI. “We know that comprehensive care improves the patient experience, and this external validation demonstrates that our efforts in this area also provide a solid return on investment.”

The Care InnovationsTM Validation Institute is recognized as one of the top entities in the health care field for validating the effectiveness, including return on investment, of care management programs. The validation, is based on data BCBSRI submitted to the Institute that was then analyzed by objective experts in population health and statistics. With BCBSRI’s validation, BCBSRI now becomes part of the Validation Institute’s national “Trusted Community” of organizations.

“Through the Validation Institute, Care Innovations seeks to provide organizations with unbiased, third-party evaluation to ensure their assessment methodology is sound, which is critical to building the most effective population health programs possible,” said Trein Schiffelbian, Executive Director for the Validation Institute.
