Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) has achieved a 4.5 star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for 2017. CMS’s rankings align with the goals of improving the patient experience, improving the health of populations, and reducing the per capita cost of health care.

“This designation symbolizes our commitment to delivering high quality health care coverage to Rhode Island seniors in partnership with local providers,” said Corey McCarty, BCBSRI, vice president, consumer segment. “We are deeply committed to being the plan of choice for our state’s seniors now and in the future.”

The CMS Star Ratings are a valuable benchmark for the quality of Medicare Advantage plans. CMS assigns Star Ratings from one to five, with five being the highest, to Medicare Advantage plans. The program is based on a series of 43 measures, including clinical measures, as well as customer satisfaction and operational efficiency, and guides consumers when comparing quality between Medicare Advantage plans.

This year’s findings mark the fourth consecutive year that BCBSRI’s Medicare plans have received a strong ranking between Very Good (four stars) and Excellent (five stars) on the CMS scale.
