Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced that members of its management team recently participated in a volunteer event to brighten up Crossroads Rhode Island, the State's largest provider of services to the homeless.
Crossroads Rhode Island provides both immediate and long-term assistance to the homeless and disconnected in the state as they journey toward a better quality of life. Assisting more than 70 Crossroads' staff and clients in a broader clean-up effort, the group of BCBSRI management team members helped brighten the rear entrance and courtyard of the Crossroads Women's Shelter by planting several large planters and window boxes with a mix of colorful annuals, and weeded and mulched flower beds.
"Given the current economy, the number of our fellow Rhode Islanders who are homeless is staggering," said James E. Purcell, president and CEO, BCBSRI. "Crossroads does a remarkable job helping those who need it most, and we are proud to have helped to keep Crossroads Rhode Island facilities clean and safe."
In 2004, Crossroads moved to the former YMCA building at 160 Broad Street, Providence, allowing the organization to provide greater assistance to the growing number of people who suffer from homelessness in Rhode Island. Crossroads offers essential life services, referrals, and advocacy such as 24-hour crisis intervention, housing, and vocational training.
"We continuously seek ongoing commitment from caring Rhode Islanders who share our vision to help the homeless and disconnected, and it's clear that BCBSRI shares that vision," said Anne Nolan, president, Crossroads Rhode Island. "We are grateful that our grounds and facilities are clean and well maintained, as we want to ensure every person that receives assistance here does so with the dignity and respect they deserve."
In conjunction with the cleanup effort, the BCBSRI Community Wellness Van was on site to offer free blood pressure and sun damage screenings to clients and staff of Crossroads.
