Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced the appointment of Dorothy A. Coleman as its new executive vice president and chief financial officer. A 27-year veteran of the healthcare industry, Ms. Coleman will lead the organization’s financial operations.
“Dorothy brings extensive experience in the health insurance industry, as well as a solid understanding of the challenges currently faced by both physicians and hospitals,” said James E. Purcell, BCBSRI’s president and CEO. “This expertise will help us work more effectively with the state’s healthcare providers to build a better healthcare delivery system that focuses on improving the quality and affordability of healthcare for all Rhode Islanders.”
Over the course of her diverse career, Ms. Coleman has held executive-level positions in both a hospital and a multi-specialty group practice, as well as within the insurance industry. Prior to joining BCBSRI, she spent eight years with UnitedHealthcare, serving most recently as chief operating officer/interim president for the organization’s $5 billion Public Sector National Line of Business. Ms. Coleman also served in various executive leadership roles for the group’s Southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Indiana, Chicago, and Arizona health plans.
Earlier in her career, Ms. Coleman served as CFO/COO of Cigna Healthcare of Arizona, and CFO/associate administrator at FHP International, a leading provider of a wide range of health insurance and managed care services.
“Like many others, I feel the nation’s healthcare system is fragmented and needs to be improved to address access, quality, and the cost of care. Due to the complexities of the issues, however, I believe that the greatest opportunities to truly actualize healthcare reform are at the local level where the care is actually being provided,” said Ms. Coleman. “I am very excited about joining an independent and nonprofit health insurer, and look forward to helping BCBSRI partner with local healthcare providers to make real healthcare reform a reality here in Rhode Island.”
Ms. Coleman is a Certified Public Accountant, graduated with a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Phoenix, and studied finance at Arizona State University. She is a Six Sigma Champion, participated in Leadership Cincinnati, and has been involved with the West Chester Chamber Alliance, Butler County United Way, and the Greater Cincinnati Health Improvement Collaborative.
Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the state's leading health insurer and now covers more than 600,000 members. Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
