RI Businesses Earn Healthy Workplace Awards from Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island and the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce

PROVIDENCE, RI  – In an effort to applaud and recognize the great work employers are doing to keep employees healthy and well, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) together with the Greater Providence Chamber of Commerce (GPCC) distributed Worksite Health Awards to 84 deserving Rhode Island companies.    At the 18th Annual Worksite Health Awards ceremony, several hundred members of the Rhode Island business community gathered to celebrate their collective efforts at improving the health and wellness of thousands of Rhode Island employees and their families.

“It’s not always easy to find time for regular exercise and healthy eating habits when you’re trying to balance a full-time work schedule and family demands, but not finding the time has unhealthy consequences,” said Peter Andruszkiewicz, president and CEO of BCBSRI.  “That’s one of the reasons that healthy workplace environments are essential to the health and well-being of Rhode Island employees and their families.  Our award winners truly go the extra mile to provide their employees with programs that make health a priority within their organizations.”

“Fit employees are less tired and more focused,” said Laurie White, president of the GPCC.  “They don’t get sick as often, which cuts down on absenteeism and healthcare expenses. Equally important, if employees feel better, they’re happier and less stressed, which makes for a better work environment. It’s good business and good for Rhode Island.”

Pete Thomas, the Season 2 At-Home Winner of NBC's “The Biggest Loser,” was the keynote speaker for the event. Having maintained his 185 lb. weight loss for seven years, Thomas is now a full-time motivational speaker and corporate wellness consultant who teaches and coaches others on nutrition, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.
To qualify for the award, companies submitted applications and proof of the number and variety of health and wellness programs offered to employees as well as proof of workplace policies that encourage healthy environments. Application responses were scored, and companies placed in Exemplary, Superior, Outstanding and Achievement categories.  Some of the most common worksite offerings included smoking cessation programming, flu immunization clinics, blood pressure screenings, and walking programs.  All Rhode Island businesses are eligible for Worksite Health Awards, which are awarded annually.

Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island is the state’s leading health insurer and covers more than 600,000 members.  The company is an independent licensee of the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.  For more information, visit BCBSRI.com and follow us on Twitter @BCBSRI.
