Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced a new fitness discount program designed to encourage members to lead healthier lifestyles. In partnership with the International Fitness Club Network (IFCN), BCBSRI large and small group, Direct Pay and Pre-existing Insurance Plan for Rhode Island members can purchase discounted health-club memberships and exercise equipment.

"This new fitness discount program will provide cost savings to our members who are interested in exercise as a way to improve their health," said Corey McCarty, director of Strategic Marketing and Product Innovation at BCBSRI. "According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people who complete two and a half hours of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week are at a lower risk for type 2 diabetes and heart disease. Additionally, regular physical activity can lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and improve overall mental health and mood."

BCBSRI members are now eligible for the lowest membership rate offered by 75 participating IFCN gyms in Rhode Island. Some are well-known franchisees such as Curves, Healthtrax, and Gold's Gym while others are independent gyms such as River Bend Athletic Club in Peacedale, Bridge to Fitness in Middletown, and Woonsocket Health and Racquet Club. With 9,500 fitness facilities in 50 states and 51 countries, there also are many options for members who may be traveling outside of Rhode Island or do not reside in the state.

The IFCN benefit offers a free, one-week trial membership at the participating clubs so members can experience a workout at the gym before signing up. Members will be extended the lowest rate for whichever membership they select. Plus, workout privileges are available at participating gyms in the IFCN network when BCBSRI members travel more than 50 miles from their home club.

Members who prefer the privacy of a home workout are eligible for a 10 percent discount on NordicTrack cardio and strength-training fitness equipment from Sears.

BlueCHiP for Medicare members already have an exercise benefit through BCBSRI's Living Fit program, where they can opt for unlimited-use membership at participating health clubs for $15 per month.

Members can download the IFCN fitness club trial membership coupon and the Sears coupon once signed in on BCBSRI.com. Members also may call IFCN at 1-800-866-8466 for more information.
