Plan is first of its kind in Rhode Island

Today, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) introduced a new and innovative health plan designed to help Rhode Islanders live healthier lifestyles and reward members for being proactive about their health. The plan, called Healthmate Coast-to-Coast® Direct Plan 1000/2000, was unveiled in time for the open enrollment period, which is May 15 through June 15, for the direct pay plans.

Whether you are the picture of good health or are managing conditions such as diabetes, asthma, or COPD, this plan offers unique features and benefits designed to support members' health goals and helps keep them focused on being healthy," said Jim Gallagher, BCBSRI assistant vice president of strategic marketing and product innovation.

Healthmate Coast-to-Coast Direct Plan 1000/2000 offers:

  • $2 copayments for certain drugs used to treat diabetes, asthma, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Full coverage for preventive services, including immunizations, screenings, lab and X-ray services, and educational counseling for nutrition, smoking, diabetes, and asthma management
  • No copayments for certain over-the-counter preventive supplements, such as children's multivitamins, folic acid, and vitamin D, when purchased at a participating pharmacy with a prescription
  • Annual foot exam and retinal exam for people with diabetes

With the addition of the new plan, BCBSRI now offers five different direct pay plans. Two of the plans feature high deductibles that may be appropriate for people willing to pay more out of pocket in exchange for lower premiums, and all of the plans offer comprehensive coverage for medical care and prescription drugs. A dental plan is also available. All subscribers also have access to the extensive, nationwide BlueCard PPO network, the largest integrated provider network in the United States, and they retain the option to visit non-network providers.

"Now is the time for individuals and families who do not have health insurance to consider purchasing one of our plans to help protect themselves from unexpected medical expenses. During open enrollment, we guarantee coverage to Rhode Islanders not eligible for health insurance through an employer, Medicare, or Medicaid, no matter what their health status," Gallagher added.

BCBSRI also offers several programs to eligible members that make purchasing health insurance more affordable:

  • AccessBlue helps qualifying individuals and families by paying a portion of their BCBSRI premium. Currently, more than 25 percent of BCBSRI's direct pay members qualify for AccessBlue.
  • Preferred Rate offers a lower premium rate based on age, gender, and health status, if individuals pass a medical questionnaire.

The company is hosting two upcoming informational meetings in East Providence and West Warwick where representatives will answer questions about the plans. The sessions will be held at:

  • Davenport's, 1925 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence (May 18 at 6 p.m.)
  • Ivy Garden, 272 Cowesett Avenue, West Warwick (June 3 at 6 p.m.)
