With a rich background in public service, criminal justice, and civic leadership in Rhode Island, including 28 years with the Rhode Island State Police, Doherty’s responsibilities will include developing and implementing proactive strategies to prevent, detect, and remediate fraud, waste, and abuse. Doherty will also be tasked with educating employees, employers, providers, and members about fraud.
“As BCBSRI works to bring down the cost of healthcare, Brendan will play a critical role in addressing fraudulent practices,” said Michele Lederberg, chief administrative officer and general counsel for BCBSRI. “Brendan’s experience in law enforcement makes him an ideal person to fill this role, and we are pleased to welcome him to our team.”
Doherty rose to the position of Superintendent and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety for the Rhode Island State Police in 2007, where he was responsible for the operations of 400 personnel, including the Rhode Island State Police, State Fire Marshal, Capitol Police, Municipal Training Academy, E911, and the Grants Administration Office. During his law enforcement career, Doherty earned 24 commendations for outstanding police work. He also served as Director of Public Safety for Roger Williams University for three years.
Doherty joins BCBSRI from Doherty Group, LLC, a security consultancy that he cofounded and led. He is the Chairman of the board of directors at The Donald W. Wyatt Detention Facility and a member of the board of directors for Special Olympics Rhode Island and Crossroads Rhode Island. He also serves on the advisory board of the Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland-Lincoln.
