Blue Cross & Blue Shield's Open Enrollment Period for Individual and Family Plans Begins May 15

(Providence, RI, 5.5.2011)

As the only insurer in the state to guarantee coverage to Rhode Islanders regardless of health status, Blue Cross & Blue Shield of Rhode Island (BCBSRI) today announced open enrollment for Plans for Individuals and Family, which will begin May 15. Offering a variety of options for individuals and families who purchase health insurance directly, these health plans encourage members to live healthy lifestyles and be proactive about their health.

"As the state's only local, non-profit health insurer, we are fully committed to supporting Rhode Islanders' health goals to provide access to high quality healthcare," said Jim Gallagher, BCBSRI assistant vice president of strategic marketing and product innovation. "Whether you are healthy or managing chronic conditions such as diabetes or asthma, our health plan options provide unique features and benefits designed to support the member."

Rhode Islanders can choose from among five different BCBSRI Plans for Individuals and Families, as well as a dental plan. Two of the plans feature high deductibles that are Health Savings Account (HSA) qualified for tax savings and may be appropriate for people willing to pay more for the services they use in exchange for lower premiums. BCBSRI's HealthMate Coast-to-Coast plans are designed for members looking for more predictable copayments for commonly used services, plus coverage and protection for larger healthcare expenses. The HealthMate Coast-to-Coast 1000/2000 plans help reduce certain copayments for members with conditions such as diabetes, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

All of the plans provide comprehensive coverage for medical care and prescription drugs. Subscribers have access to the BlueCard PPO network, the largest integrated provider network in the U.S., and they retain the option to visit non-network providers.

BCBSRI offers three assistance programs for reduced premiums to those who qualify. Those programs include:

  • AccessBlue, which helps qualifying individuals and families by paying a portion of their BCBSRI premium.
  • Preferred Rate, which offers lower premium rates based on age, gender, and health status, if individuals pass a health screening, via a written questionnaire.
  • Wellness Reward Program, which allows individuals to earn a reward equal to 10 percent of their annual paid premiums if they complete a series of wellness requirements. The Wellness Reward Program is voluntary and available to only HealthMate Coast-to-Coast Direct Plan 2000/4000 members.

The company is hosting two upcoming informational meeting in East Providence and West Warwick where representatives will answer questions about the plans. These sessions will be held at:

  • Ivy Garden, 272 Cowesett Avenue, West Warwick (May 26 at 6 p.m.)
  • Comfort Inn, 2 George Street, Pawtucket (June 10 at 10:30 a.m.)
